Between the start of the pandemic in late April and August 31, 2009, there were 116 Oregonians from 11 counties hospitalized with pandemic H1N1 influenza. There were also 12 deaths among Oregon residents.

The numbers in this table represent hospitalizations and deaths from all types of influenza since September 1, 2009. Almost all of the influenza viruses identified since then are pandemic H1N1 influenza.

Thankfully, the deaths in Oregon have slowed. The age for deaths is mostly 25-65+. Hospitalizations are still up there, and the median age is 34.

The Oregon State Public Health Laboratory is performing the following surveillance activities
for subtype specific influenza testing:
· Sentinel providers submissions (ILINet)
· Lab-confirmed hospitalization surveillance among individuals with a previous positive
influenza test (viral culture, DFA, PCR or any commercially available rapid test).
· Lab-confirmed death surveillance
· Outbreak investigations
Specimens will only be tested if submitted for the above-mentioned activities.
OSPHL will NOT be accepting specimens for 'rule out influenza' submissions for the 2009-
10 influenza season in order to allocate public health laboratory resources to H1N1
surveillance.

It should be noted that as of Oct.28, 2009 the Oregon state lab started rejecting specimens on hospitalized patients that have not already been tested positive for Influenza A by a screening test (including rapid tests). This means that if the screening test is false negative, the hospitalized patient will not be tested, and therefore not be counted in the reported totals.

(see #11 below)
