C. difficile outbreak at Headwaters hospital

With six confirmed cases of C. difficile (Clostridium difficile), an outbreak has been declared on Headwaters Health Care Centre?s Eaton Wing. The wing will remain open to new patients and visitors, but hospital officials strongly urge everyone to practice proper hand hygiene before entering or leaving patients? rooms.

?The community does not need to be concerned about coming to Headwaters for a scheduled test, procedure or emergency visit,? Dr. Ken Derksen, chief of staff, said in a news release. ?Good hand hygiene practices by patients, visitors and hospital staff remain the best protection in preventing the spread of C. difficile or introducing it into the hospital from the community...?

C. difficile death reported at Headwaters

The Headwaters Health Care Centre (HHCC) was on pace to have its C. difficile outbreak lifted on July 26, but the recent death of an elderly patient has changed those plans.

On Thursday (July 14), HHCC announced one re-occurrence of C. difficile and that one patient died due to the bacterial infection in Orangeville.
?An elderly patient?s death on Wednesday, July 13 is linked to C. difficile,? Dr. Ken Derksen, chief of staff at HHCC said in a news release. ?The patient fell into a high risk group.?

Late last week, Headwaters reported no new hospital-acquired cases of C. difficile had been recorded in Orangeville since June 21; it reported four cases in May and five in June. The local hospital first reported a C. difficile outbreak on June 7, and was eyeing July 26 as the date it would be lifted.
Provided there are no new cases, the earliest date to declare the hospital?s outbreak over is Aug. 10. Hospital officials continue to work with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) to manage the outbreak...

In consultation with Wellington- Dufferin- Guelph Public Health, Headwaters Health Care Centre has declared its C.difficile outbreak over.

The hospital says it has had no new cases of hospital acquired C.difficile infection since July 27 but currently has one patient being treated for hospitalacquired C.difficile. Based on the guidance provided by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care the hospital has met the criteria to lift the outbreak...
