Patients hit by superbugs at PRHC

An antibiotic-resistant superbug outbreak has struck a Peterborough Regional Health Centre general medical unit that had a similar outbreak that lasted two months late last year.

A patient with methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has died, but the death isn't necessarily connected to the infection, said Margaret Jay, infection prevention and control and environmental services manager at the hospital.

"We certainly are fully operational. Programs and services across the hospital are not affected," she said of the outbreak.

There are three confirmed cases of MRSA and six confirmed cases of vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) in the B3 general medical unit, the hospital announced Wednesday...

The outbreak of MRSA at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre is over ? but hospital officials are still monitoring another virus.

MRSA, or Methicilllin Resistant Staphylocuccus aureus, is a stubborn bacteria that can affect hospital patients, said Margaret Jay, PRHC's manager of infection prevention and control.

"Hospital patients are more vulnerable because we have tubes and lines in them, giving the bacteria more entry points," she said.

There are no restrictions in place for hospital visitors.

Hospital patients are regularly tested via swabbing for infection.

An outbreak was identified in unit B3 in late June and has been monitored; the most recent testing, which concluded at the end of last week, determined no new cases had occurred, Jay said.

But three new cases of VRE, or Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus, have been found since July 4, she said. This brings to nine the total number of cases since June 28...
