Ontario health units reported 642 new confirmed cases of influenza A for the current week through the integrated Public Health Information System (iPHIS). A total of 281 institutional respiratory infection outbreaks have been reported in 2010 up to Weeks 51 & 52, including 33 new influenza A outbreaks from Toronto (18), Central West (8), South West (4), Eastern (1) and Central East (2) health regions. For week 52, Toronto reported widespread influenza activity; Central East, Central West, Eastern and South West health regions reported ?localized? level influenza activity; and the remaining health regions reported either sporadic, no influenza activity or did not report for week 52. The ILI rate is higher than the average rate for week 52 from previous years.

As of April 9, 2011, 2166 hospitalizations and 192 deaths have been reported among lab confirmed influenza
cases reported in Ontario for the 2010-2011 season. Most of the hospitalizations and deaths have occurred in
influenza A cases. The highest rates of hospitalization have been observed in people under the age of five and​
65 years of age and older. The highest rates of death have been seen in people 65 years of age and older.

Overall, influenza activity in Ontario during week 15, 2011, was lower compared to week 14, 2011. Ontario health
units reported 54 new laboratory confirmed cases of influenza for the current week through the integrated Public
Health Information System (iPHIS). A total of 840 institutional respiratory infection outbreaks have been reported
in the 2010/11 season up to Week 15. No new institutional influenza outbreaks were reported for week 15. Health
regions that reported influenza activity for week 15, reported ?localized? level influenza activity, i.e . North East,
Eastern, Central East, Central West and South West. The ILI rate is higher than the average rate for week 15​

Ontario health units reported 35 new confirmed cases of influenza for the weeks 18 and 19 through the
integrated Public Health Information System (iPHIS). No new institutional influenza outbreaks were reported
for Weeks 18 and 19. A total of 900 institutional respiratory infection outbreaks have been reported in the
2010/2011 season up to Week 19, which includes 432 influenza outbreaks. For week 19, Eastern, North
West, Central East and Toronto health regions reported ?sporadic? level activity; North East, Central West and
Southwest health regions reported ?no activity?. The ILI rate of 19.60/1,000 patient visits is slightly higher than​
​

the average rate for week 19 from previous years which is 17.25/1,000 patient visits.​
