Wild rainstorm in Toronto causes flooding
By DON PEAT and ANGELA HENNESSY, QMI Agency
TORONTO - A heavy rainstorm ground Toronto to a halt Monday night just as many residents were trying to make their way home.
Heavy rains flooded the Don Valley Parkway and other major roads, knocked out power for thousands across the GTA - including roughly 80% of Mississauga - and led to flooding that froze TTC subway service during the evening commute.
The city was still scrambling to respond to the massive dump of rain late into Monday night.
Flood warnings remain in place as the Toronto Police and City of Toronto Emergency Services advised the public to "remain in their homes, avoid underpasses and low-lying areas."
Police warned the Toronto Region Conservation Authority's Flood Duty Officer has advised "the banks of the Don River are at risk of collapse in the area of Hoggs Hollow in the area of Yonge Street and York Mills..."
