KITCHENER ? Five patients are infected with hepatitis C after having colonoscopies at the Tri-City Colonoscopy Clinic in Kitchener on one day in late 2013.

Region of Waterloo Public Health are still investigating the hepatitis C outbreak ? the first in the region ? and looking for the cause.

Regional medical officer of health Dr. Liana Nolan said inspections by public health officials found no evidence of ongoing risk to patients, and the Sportsworld Crossing Road clinic continues to perform colonoscopies.

"We don't have any reason to believe that right now there's risk," Nolan said...

...Region of Waterloo Public Health is checking patients who were at the Tri-City Colonoscopy Clinic the day before Dec. 24, 2013, when it's believed a lapse in infection control protocols caused patient-to-patient transmission of the blood-borne virus.

Of the 13 people who had procedures that day, five were found to be infected with the chronic liver disease.

The day before, 25 patients were seen at the Sportsworld Crossing Road clinic. Results have come in for more than half ? all negative, said regional medical officer of health Dr. Liana Nolan.

Twelve staff members are also being tested...
