You would expect to find botulism, leprosy and cholera in Third World countries.
So it might come as shock to learn all three diseases that are rare for North America showed up in Halton last year.
Halton medical officials treated one person each with these diseases, along with 24 cases of AIDS, 18 cases of typhoid fever, 11 cases of measles and one case of SARS (Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in 2014, according to a report submitted to the Region?s Health and Social Services committee this week.
But the alarming news was that infectious diseases are increasing in Halton ? and in Ontario ? primarily due to an increase in influenza and gonorrhea cases...
