China confirms 2nd human bird flu fatality since February [2009]

H5N1 bird flu claimed its 2nd human fatality in China this month [July
2009] when the Ministry of Health confirmed the death of a Guangxi
Zhuang Autonomous Region man on Thursday [?9 Jul 2009]. The
41-year-old man in Nanning City developed fever and headache symptoms
on 12 Feb 2009 and died at 5 a.m. on 20 Feb 2009 after all rescue
measures proved ineffectual. Tests of the man were H5N1 positive, said
China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

On 18 Feb 2009, the Health Ministry confirmed a 22-year-old man in the
central Hunan Province had tested positive for H5N1. He had died on 24
Jan 2009.

China: avian influenza situation - WHO update
---------------------------------------------
The Ministry of Health in China has reported a new case of human infection
with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 41 year old male from
Xixiangtang District of Nanning City of Guangxi Autonomous Region.

He developed symptoms on 12 Feb 2008 and died on 20 Feb 2008. The case was
confirmed by the national laboratory on 21 Feb 2008. The case had contact
with sick and dead poultry prior to his illness. All contacts have been
placed under medical observation. All remain healthy to date.

Of the 29 cases confirmed to date in China, 19 have been fatal.

ProMed usually does better than this. Someone must not have had their coffee this morning. I smell a correction coming. Note that the original source cited by ProMed never uses the year "2009" - the ProMed moderator makes that assumption. The locations, dates, and ages all match perfectly.

I guess the Pandemic H1N1 has ProMed moderators up all day and night tracking. If I remember correctly, ProMed "echo" reported a few weeks ago a Lassa fever importation into South Africa that actually occurred in 2007.

Let's see how long it takes to get a correction posted. Shouldn't take more than 24 hours.

And if anyone wants further proof, here is the report of the Hunan case mentioned in today's posting, confirmed on Feb. 18, 2008, not 2009.

Notification of a case of human avian flu in Hunan
--------------------------------------------------------------
The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health
received notification from the Ministry of Health today (18 Feb 2008]
concerning a confirmed human case of avian influenza H5N1 in Hunan
Province. A CHP spokesman said the patient was a 22-year-old man who
developed headache and fever on 16 Jan 2008 and was subsequently
admitted to a hospital for treatment. He died on 24 Jan 2008.
Retrospective laboratory tests on the patient's specimen by Chinese
Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention yesterday yielded positive
for H5N1. The CHP is maintaining close liaison with the Ministry of
Health to obtain more information on the case.

On February 18, the health ministry confirmed a 22-year-old man surnamed Li in the central Hunan Province had tested positive for H5N1. Li died on January 24.

Actually, the 2008 date was in the URL. No coffee and no GLASSES! Also no logic. Why would a July story be talking about a February death????

I think we've had too much fun at ProMed's expense here, guys. We all make mistakes. Fortunately, most of ours don't get posted to ProMed for all to see. I agree with Rwilmer that this thread should probably be locked (and maybe cleaned up to remove the coffee and glasses insults). Sorry.
