Published : Thursday, 10 Nov 2011, 3:32 PM ESTSYLVANIA, Ohio (WUPW) - Toledo-Lucas County Health Department officials are investigating what they believe to be a recent Norovirus outbreak that has sicked 147 students at St. Joseph's School in Sylvania.
The health department is investigating the causative agent of the outbreak of the elementary students. The children are dealing with a 24-hour stomach flu, similar to the Norovirus.
Twenty-five percent of the St. Joseph student population were home sick the past two days. The school is going through a cleaning overhaul.
"Normally there are 20 kids (sick) in the school," said Larry Vasko, Deputy Toledo-Lucas Co. Health Commissioner. "with the 147 now out of 600, that's roughly 25 percent of their school, between 20-25 percent of the kids are off so that's highly unusual. So there is definitely going on there but we're getting everything in place to take care of it."
