Medical Mystery: Sisters illness baffles doctors
Posted: Feb 10, 2012 6:55 PM PST Updated: Feb 10, 2012 8:03 PM PST CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Three Cleveland sisters are all sick with the same mystery illness.

It's a deadly disease -- one that's very rare. So the fact that three sisters all have it has doctors scrambling.

Sisters Hanna, Haley, and McCayla Crouch appear perfect in every way but each one of them has a rare and deadly disease.

It's called Interstitial Lung Disease and with every passing day, they are losing lung capacity and their ability to breath....

This sounds an awful lot like the outbreak from the past few years in South Korea in which familiar clusters of interstitial lung disease were caused by use of a toxic humidifer fungicide:

Unlikely to be exactly the same, but something to think about....

I agree it is something to consider, Alert. The article says the family learned about the lung disease 2 years ago when one girl had pneumonia, so that would have been during the winter when people are enclosed with concentrations of all sorts of chemicals building up in the home air.

Of course, it might not have been winter when the initial lung damage was done. There is a long list of possible causes of chILD here:

I think there's a big beryllium plant near Cleveland, but I'm sure if there were an occupational exposure that could have brought beryllium into the home they'd have run the test for that.
