COLUMBUS, Ohio --
Amy Thiel knew her daughter wasn?t feeling well, but didn't realize just how serious her symptoms were. Four-year-old Maria had a sore throat, and then all of a sudden a rash appeared.
?No complaints all day until Sunday night. She had a rash and it started on her upper torso and spread. It spread everywhere,? said Thiel, a mother of two daughters in New Albany. They made a quick trip to the doctor to learn that Maria had something they never expected.
Maria was diagnosed with scarlet fever -- something that was greatly feared a century ago...

?When strep throat is going around a school, and a lot of kids are getting infected, we see a lot more of the scarlet fever and we?ve seen that recently,? said Dr. Laurie Hommema of Riverside Family Practice...
