There is currently a multi-state outbreak of H5N1, also known as Avian Influenza (Bird Flu). At this time, the Ohio Department of Health has announced a presumed positive human case in Mercer County. While the risk to humans is low, those individuals with direct contact to infected poultry are at a higher risk. To date, there are no confirmed cases nationwide that were spread from human to human.

Guidance for Seeking Care Related to Avian Influenza:

Individuals with direct exposure to infected poultry barns experiencing severe flu like symptoms including shortness of breath, fever, cough, muscle aches, sore throat, or eye redness, are advised to seek medical care at the emergency room.

Individuals with NO direct exposure to infected poultry are encouraged to seek medical treatment as they would for any other flu like illness, such as an appointment with a primary care provider or urgent care. No matter the type of influenza, emergent flu symptoms always warrant seeking care at the emergency room.

Individuals with direct exposure to infected poultry barns experiencing severe flu like symptoms, including shortness of breath, fever, cough, muscle aches, sore throat, or eye redness, are advised to seek medical care at the emergency room.
