Mass culling of fowl begins at Angul after bird flu confirmed

BHUBANESWAR: Mass culling of fowls at a state-owned poultry farm in Angul began on Tuesday following positive cases of bird flu confirmed by a Bhopal-based Central laboratory. As many as 224 chickens died on a single day on Thursday after which the samples were sent to Bhopal for test.
"All birds totalling around 1000, mostly indigenous chicken varieties in the farm, will be killed. Some chickens of different varieties were brought to the farm from Hyderabad a few weeks back after which many deaths occurred unusually. We are suspecting the virus was transmitted by those birds," said Fisheries and Animal Resources secretary, Bishnupada Sethi.

Around 1,500 chickens died in the government poultry here from January 30 to February 11. The district authorities sent the samples to a Phulnakhara-based laboratory which stated that the deaths occurred due to other reasons and started treatment on the farm.

As the chickens continued to perish, the authorities sent the samples of suspected avian flu to National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, which confirmed the presence of an H5N1 virus on Monday. This prompted the district administration to take steps to eradicate the strain.
