San Francisco issues alert over ocular syphilis

Just about a month after Washington State reported an increase in ocular syphilis in the men who have sex with men (MSM) population, San Francisco health officials are reporting a cluster of 7 cases since December 2014.

The health department says five of the affected individuals were MSM and six were HIV-infected...

Syphilis: Washington reports 6 ocular syphilis cases in past month, blindness reported in two

Since mid-December 2014, the Washington Department of Health has reported six cases of ocular syphilis, or syphilis of the eyes, causing blindness in at least two patients.

Four of the cases occurred in King County, while the other two are from elsewhere in the state..

But there already are 14 cases of the sexually transmitted disease in California and elsewhere -- eight in San Francisco and six in Washington state. Most all occurred in men who have sex with men.
