NZ - vaccine against swine flu will be contained in next year's seasonal flu jab

The Ministry of Health says a vaccine against swine flu will be contained in next year's seasonal flu jab.

The ministry says immunisation against swine flu, which has swept the world, will be available from the autumn.

Mass vaccinations against swine flu are under way in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and elsewhere.

The ministry says immunisation in New Zealand will be part of the seasonal flu programme.

People aged over 65 and others with chronic conditions get free flu vaccinations, and the Government is considering whether to extend that to protect others at risk of swine flu, such as young people and pregnant women.

A separate vaccine will be available early next year for healthcare and emergency workers.

Statement from the MOH

Vaccine update

Next year's seasonal influenza vaccine will contain the pandemic influenza strain and will be available in New Zealand in autumn. Immunisation from pandemic influenza will be available as part of the seasonal influenza programme. For some people it will be free of charge - the Government subsidises seasonal influenza immunisation for people aged 65 years or over and people aged 6 months to 64 years with a range of chronic conditions.

Vaccination statement October 7

Health Minister Tony Ryall says the first of the 300,000 doses of swine flu vaccine for the protection of frontline health workers on order from Baxter Healthcare Ltd arrived in September. He says 72,000 doses are now in the country and the remainder will be here by December.

"The vaccine will be available for use following assessment by Medsafe. This is expected to be in February 2010. If circumstances change the vaccine could be assessed and potentially used more quickly" says Mr Ryall.

"The WHO has recommended the seasonal flu vaccine for the southern hemisphere 2010 flu season should contain the swine flu (H1N1) 09 strain " says Mr Ryall.
