SWINE FLU STAY AWAY! Nash Anand does not have the dreaded swine flu but Porirua barber Rachel Cox is taking precautions, like keeping a surgical mask close at hand.

<!-- -normal_story_landing- --> <!--start components/story/common_content--> At least one Porirua retailer is taking the swine flu pandemic very seriously, turning away customers who show flu symptoms and using a surgical mask when she thinks she needs to.

Rachel Cox, who owns Rach's Barber Shop on Kilkerran Place, was unhappy when about 10 school children entered her store last Tuesday, "sniffing and coughing and carrying on".

She immediately asked them to leave and has no qualms about the lost business.

"One of them was coughing and had this green stuff coming out of his nose, it was disgusting.

"With what's been going on, I think we need to educate the public more about this being a real problem here in Porirua. Not enough people are taking this seriously."

She bought a mask from a pharmacy the next day and will not hesitate to put it on if one of her customers looks sickly. She also sprays her premises regularly with disinfectant spray and has a sign on her door that asks people not to enter if they are unwell.

As well as an upcoming overseas trip she does not want to jeopardise, Mrs Cox says someone passing on swine flu threatens her livelihood.
"I just hope parents aren't keeping their kids home from school if they're sick, then coming into town to do shopping or have a haircut. It's about being considerate to others."
