Eight cases of swine flu (H1N1) have struck Hawke's Bay since February. Three patients are in intensive care and one in a coma.

The outbreak follows 2009's H1N1 epidemic, during which 780,000 New Zealanders were infected with the virus.

It is a waiting game for one woman she watches for positive symptoms to emerge from her sedated, ventilated and unconscious twin, diagnosed and a victim of an H1N1 virus outbreak in Hawke's Bay.

Nikki, who wished to be known by first name only, said her sister complained of a persistent cough on "day one" of feeling unwell.

Swine flu virus victim critical

One of Hawke's Bay Hospital's patients symptomatic of the H1N1 virus was last night in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Profiled in yesterday's Hawke's Bay Today, the woman in her 50s remained sedated, ventilated and unconscious.

She is one of eight people to be confirmed or suspected to have H1N1 at Hawke's Bay Hospital since the end of February.

In the wake of an H1N1 influx, local medical officials are preparing for what has been called an "early" flu season in Hawke's Bay.

They are encouraging those who show symptoms of the virus to see their physician in an effort to stop an epidemic, similar to 2009.

A flu strain similar to the H1N1 or more commonly known as swine flu is currently sweeping over New Zealand. The pre-winter flu virus has prompted health authorities to encourage New Zealanders to have their flu shots early.

According to reports, the flu pandemic is caused by the same flu strain, which struck down 780,000 people in 2009. One in every three school-age children had the flu.

Hawke's Bay Hospital has already reported eight cases of H1N1. One female patient in her 50s has remained in critical condition for 13 days. An office in Wellington came in contact with the flu virus in February while people from Christchurch and Omauru were reported having the acute illness only within the week.
