NZ - flu-like bug closes Karori primary school

Regional Public Health is warning sick people to stay away from crowds, school and work to prevent the spread of a flu-like bug that closed a Karori primary school today.

Fumigators are attempting to rid a flu-like virus from St Teresa's School which closed today due to illness.

One third of the Karori school's 218 pupils were home sick yesterday and half of the teaching staff were expected to be too unwell to teach today.

St Teresa's School acting principal Jillian Carberry said more than 50 students called in sick last Friday and it had escalated during the week.

"It was coming in dribs and drabs last week but it got up to 70 students ill, which is a third of our roll."

Students were calling in sick with sore throats and high temperatures, as well as runny noses and headaches.
