The number of people with the mumps in Auckland has hit 1000, with experts saying it now can't be contained without vaccinations.

The latest Auckland Regional Public Health figures show 1003 people have contracted the disease since it broke out earlier this year

And the more people that have the disease, the faster it travelled through the community.

A senior lecturer in vaccinology at Auckland University, Helen Petousis-Harris, said it had reached a threshold where it would keep spreading until it ran out of people who could contract it...

Auckland's mumps outbreak has become an epidemic and a vaccination campaign is needed to stop it spreading across New Zealand, health experts say.

More than 1000 people have caught mumps in Auckland this year, with the number of cases almost doubling since the start of October.

The outbreak was now an epidemic because it could not be contained, the public health officials say in a joint letter to the Ministry of Health.

The letter was signed by the chief executives of Auckland, Counties Manukau and Waitemata district health boards, and two senior Auckland Regional Public Health service officials, RNZ reports...

Mumps cases swell in Waikato

Waikato has been caught up in a mumps epidemic.

Seventy-five confirmed cases of mumps have been recorded in the region this year, including 49 in Hamilton.

Nationwide, more than 1200 mumps cases have been reported.

Until this year, there had been no mumps cases recorded in Waikato since 2012...

A suspected case of mumps has health officials warning that the recent outbreak may have spread to the top of the South Island.

People who stayed at the Inlet Backpackers in Collingwood on December 27 or Blue Moon Lodge in Havelock on December 25 or 26 may have been exposed to mumps.

The person with mumps has now been isolated, and people do not need to cancel bookings or alter their holiday plans, but remain alert to the symptoms...

Mumps outbreak continues to spread

The current mumps epidemic in New Zealand has infected a total of 1070 people, with new figures showing 25 were diagnosed over the holiday period.

Auckland health leaders in December said the outbreak had reached epidemic levels, and urged a national response to help slow the disease.

It was mostly people aged between 11 and 29 who had been affected by the disease, with low immunisations across that age group.
