A 17-year-old Bay of Islands woman was hospitalised with probable measles yesterday.

It is suspected she came in contact with the virus in Auckland...

...More than 580 cases of the disease (confirmed plus probable), most of them from the Auckland region, were reported during an outbreak last year.

People are being warned to check family members are protected from measles after the notification of a 17-year-old Bay of Islands woman with a probable outbreak.

It is suspected the woman came in contact with the virus in Auckland.

There were 457 confirmed or probable cases of measles ? 76 required hospitalisation ? in the Auckland region alone as at 9am on January 16.

Northland's medical officer of health Dr Jonathan Jarman says he was notified shortly before the patient was admitted to Whangarei Hospital on Sunday...

Porirua measles cases prompt alert

Wellington health officials have issued an alert after seeing three cases of measles in Porirua already this year.

Regional Public Health medical officer Margot McLean said general practitioners had been warned about measles in the area and asked to be extra vigilant to avoid a community spread.

All of the Porirua cases were thought to be related to South Auckland...

The first case was a teenager who had come back from a holiday in South Auckland in early January, followed by a household member two weeks later.

The last case was a child who had not had any obvious contact with the earlier cases, but who Dr McLean believed was probably related.

A second Measles strike for Northland

A six month old girl in Whangarei has been confirmed by Medical Officer of Health, Dr Jonathan Jarman with Measles. This is the second notified case in Northland this year, last month a 17 year old Bay of Islands woman was diagnosed with the disease.

The child had been identified as a possible contact to the measles case in January and had been provided information by public health staff...

Measles update for the Bay of Plenty and Lakes communities

The threat of measles to the Bay of Plenty and Lakes communities is now much lower, with the last local case of measles confirmed in December.

During the outbreak, parents had the opportunity to protect their babies from measles by providing them with their first dose of MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccine from 12 months of age and the second dose 28 days later.

"While Auckland continues to report the occasional case, the risk of getting measles locally has reduced significantly. General practices have therefore been advised to go back to offering the MMR vaccine at the usual ages of 15 months and 4 years. It remains important for parents to ensure their children receive both doses of the vaccine for protection from measles," says Dr Phil Shoemack, Medical Officer of Health...

Health authorities are thanking Aucklanders for doing their part in helping end the measles outbreak which began in May 2011, with no new cases linked to the outbreak since 12 June this year.

Dr Richard Hoskins from the Auckland Regional Public Health Service says the increased uptake of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine has played a large part in halting the spread of the disease in the Auckland region...
