NYC Changing Its H1N1 Reporting

On the NYC Department of Health Website:

New case numbers were posted yesterday 6/23/09, and the next update is scheduled for 7/1/09, a week from today.

Also they are now listing common risk factors in hospitalized patients:

30% Asthma
21% No known risk factor
14% under 2
12% diabetes
11% other respiratory conditions
11% heart disease
8% chronic liver or kidney disease
8% immune deficiency
6% pregnancy
4% over 65
(3% medical background unknown)

And in patients who died:

28% immune deficiency
25% asthma
22% diabetes
19% heart disease

So, 82% are between the ages of 2 and 65 (assuming the 3% unknown are not in the two outlying age groups). They should release the same information for seasonal influenza. That would be very enlightening (or it may be in Fluview or MMWR).

And in patients who died:

25% asthma
22% diabetes
19% heart disease

I wonder how many of those had more than one of the listed conditions. They also don't list obesity. That would, I think, make Asst. Principal Weiner be in the healthy category, as I don't recall him having any of the other listed conditions.

I don't see obesity on that list........so, is this due to:

a. Steep learning curve, and obesity is no longer considered a risk factor?
b. NYC never considered obesity as a risk factor?
c. It isn't politically correct to include obesity as a risk factor?
