BHUBANESWAR: Looks like the Naveen Patnaik Government will have to go on an employee-pleasing spree.
After medical doctors and government high school contract teachers got what they demanded, veterinarians are out to claim their due. Seeking parity in pay with doctors as per the Fifth Pay Commission recommendation, they have decided to go on an indefinite strike from April 1. Worse, they plan to withdraw from the bird flu monitoring exercise.
Besides, the serving veterinarians will also sport black badges beginning tomorrow till their demands are met.
The State Government recently extended the benefits of the Fifth Pay Commission payscale to doctors after the Orissa Medical Services Association (OMSA) members went on strike.
In fact, the Pay Commission had called for equal payscale for both the disciplines and most of the states have adhered to that, barring, of course Orissa, general secretary of Orissa Veterinary Association (OVA) Muktikanta Bhuyan said.
"We have been demanding a level playing field. The Fifth Pay Commission had clearly equated general doctors with veterinarians and the Government belatedly accepted the demands of the doctors for salary structure based on its recommendations. Logically speaking, the revised salary structure should have been suo motu made applicable to us," he told mediapersons here. Hitherto government had maintained parity for both these services and the discriminatory attitude has baffled the veterinary service members.
