The Northwest Territories is running through its resources to deal with the latest COVID-19 outbreak "pretty rapidly," said Health Minister Julie Green. Now, the territory has asked the federal government and the Canadian Red Cross for additional staff and supplies.

The minister told CBC News on Wednesday that the territory needs help with testing and lab analysis and more people to administer vaccinations and fill other roles, and that it's looking for more equipment — though she did not specify what equipment is needed.

"We have reached out to the federal government and to the Red Cross for additional resources," Green said.

"We were already challenged with the amount of staff we had available because of the time of year [with] lots of people on holiday. Now we have this tremendous need for more nurses."

The territory was already facing a nursing shortage before the latest outbreak...

Military called in to help NWT as territory sees surge of COVID-19 cases

Public Safety Canada says it has approved a request for help from the Northwest Territories as the territory deals with a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The territory says there are 198 active cases, with the majority of them occurring in the Sahtu region.

The Fort Good Hope area has been particularly hard hit, with 86 active cases in a community of about 500...

The total number of active COVID-19 cases in the N.W.T. rose to 140 according to a Friday evening update from the territory's public health department, which also announced an outbreak at a Yellowknife school.

The number of active cases is up by 10 since Thursday.

The Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) said there are 16 new cases of the virus in the territory. The number of resolved cases has grown by five, from 227 to 232.

Public health said it had received "further information" which led to the removal of five previously identified probable cases...
