OR: Virus hits hard in Coos Bay facility

COOS BAY, Ore. -- About three fourths of the residents and half of the staff of a Coos Bay rehabilitation and care center have been diagnosed with the highly contagious norovirus, a gastrointestinal illness.
Family members of the 50 or so residents of the Hearthside Rehabilitation and Specialty Care Center were not notified for more than a week after the outbreak in early May.
At least one administrator left permanently during that time.
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever.
Though it is usually mild it can be fatal to the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
So far none of those at the center has been hospitalized.
Nursing director Sue Gallaher said notifications did not go out earlier because she herself was home with stomach illness and could not send them.

SEATTLE — The Norwegian Star cruise ship is on its way on another cruise from Seattle to Alaska, after a special cleaning to rid surfaces of a virus causing a stomach flu.
More than 100 passengers came down with viral gastroenteritis on last week's trip. Some sick passengers were quarantined to their cabins and the cruise line said seven were put off the ship in Skagway after leaving their cabins against orders.
Symptoms of the illness that lasted about 24 hours was consistent with Norwalk virus infection, which has been a problem on cruise ships. The virus is transmitted through contaminated food and water.
The ship returned to Seattle Sunday and departed Sunday night. The cruise line said new passengers were told of the illness and given the option of delaying their trip to another time.
