Two months ago, Mike Osterholm said publicly in Ventura County, California that he and his wife had agreed to Protective Sequestration for her and his younger children for the duration of the Pandemic.
He said he would not return home during the pandemic. His "home" is being built in the MN countryside, next to a running creek. His interpretation of this Pandemic will be that it will be virulent enough (my words, "vicious enough") to place his own life at risk and avoid the loss of his family.
Stop just for a moment... and think about this man is assuming, and what he really believes about the probability of attenuation of the virulence of this virus.
Mike is saying, there's LITTLE TO NO CHANCE [emphais and words mine] this virus will decline in virulence, that it WILL kill young people [his kids], and that all that 21st century American society can do is prepare to hide out, totally independent of each other... which sounds a lot like total collapse of the distribution chain for a period of months.

If Mike, head of CIDRAP, concludes that the only safe protection is to hide out, I believe we should heed his shared plan and try as best we can to plan to isolate ourselves as best we can.

Hiding out (protective sequestration) is only suitable at the individual or family level. But, it is only half the solution. Our JIT economy depends on social interaction. Many individuals are required to work together in enclosed or confined spaces. I don't see how it is possible to have large scale sequestration and have a functioning economy. Some people will have to be out in public.
On the other hand, wide spread sequestration may slow down the spread of a pandemic and that might help maintain infrastructure even if doesn't lower the CFR.

The message is to embrace society and help our fellow man in the most safe and responsible manner.
The method to do this is a combination of community participation and protective sequestration. This appears to be what Dr. Osterholm is doing.
In your own home prepare an area where the "bread winner" can easily come and go that is separate from the rest of the family. Try to have as much personal protective equipment (PPE) available for that family member as possible. Be prepared to live this way for a few months possibly. Form neighborhood alliances so that supplies and other services can be acquired in a timely and secure fashion.
GR - You are single without children. Also, from your postings in the econ forum, it appears that you have the financial ability to not work for an extended period of time. Most persons are not in your shoes. The persons who are lucky enough to have employment during a pandemic period need to function and earn income.

There is big news I picked up from the National Safety Council convention in San Diego, CA yesterday.
There is a brand new already NIOSH approved, N95/N100 face mask that will be available way below current market prices. Production per location will be 1 million a day, if the raw materials can continue to flow into the plant. Multiple locations can start to produce this respirator very quickly. It will be cookie cutter. This will rescue the world at least a little bit, so that first line responders if this is adopted, will not run out of this PPE item.
This will allow people with appropriate eye wear, which I will have some news on from the Show yesterday, to function in society, especially first line responders.
I'm quite excited over what I saw viz a viz the respirator. It will work easily with almost every eye covering.
