Of those 81 of the confirmed and probable cases and 16 of the suspect cases are in Bernalillo County...

In 2010, Dr. Smelser said there were just 40 cases throughout the entire county...

Two more students have been infected with whooping cough, bringing the total of those infected in Belen Consolidated Schools up to four.

The New Mexico Department of Health contacted the Belen Middle School nurse on Monday about two football players infected with whooping cough, a highly contagous upper respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis...

Whooping cough cases increased over 2010

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ?

Whooping cough cases in New Mexico are increasing and health officials warn Bernalillo County is ground zero for the state's worst outbreak in years.

The Albuquerque Journal reports at least 243 cases of the bacterial illness have been reported this year to the New Mexico Department of Health, up from 150 cases in 2010.

The rise in pertussis, or whooping cough, has reached the level of breakout in at least one New Mexico county. What is stopping the deadly bacteria from coming to southern New Mexico?

"We know that historically, in New Mexico and around the U.S., that pertussis increases every three to five years," said Dr. Chad Smelser, a medical epidemiologist who tracks infectious diseases, in an email. "2011 had the highest number of cases in Bernalillo county since 1990." There are 169 cases in that county and 244 cases in the state at the beginning of 2011, Smelser said...
