Nigeria tops list of countries with high pneumonia rates in Africa:report

LAGOS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria has been listed with three others in Africa as countries with the highest rates of infection leading to pneumonia in the continent, the Lagos-based Nigerian Compass newspaper reported on Tuesday.
This was revealed in a recent study on two strains of pneumonia(streptococcus pneumonia) and Hib (haemophilus influenza type b), conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), the report said.
The results of the study cited Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya as the other countries, it said.
According to the study, 10 countries with the greatest number and greatest proportion of global pneumococcal cases were in Asia and Africa, accounting for 66 percent of cases worldwide.
Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung tissue affecting one or both sides of the chest that often occurs as a result of an infection.
