Ministry organises mass rally on bird flu

Ebonyi Ministry of Information says its public enlightenment arm has concluded plans to organise a mass rally on avian influenza otherwise known as bird flu.
The Information Commissioner, Mr Abia Onyike, disclosed this in Abakaliki when the leader of the South-East surveillance team, Federal Ministry of Information and Communication, Abuja, visited him.
Onyike said although cases of bird flu had not been reported in Ebonyi, the rally was meant to sensitise the people on strategies to adopt in preventing the spread of the disease.
The rally?s target are poultry farmers, women, youth organisations, teachers and civil society groups, he said.
Onyike said the public enlightenment committee of the ministry had concluded sensitisation workshops and seminar selected local government areas covering the three senatorial zones.
He added that during those workshops, people were educated on how to prevent the avian influenza.
The commissioner explained that the enlightenment activities were funded by UNICEF office in Enugu.
He expressed gratitude to Gov. Sam Egwu of Ebonyi for creating an inter-ministerial committee to prevent the spread of the flu.
In her speech, the team Leader, Mrs. Flora Okoroafor, commended the efforts so far
made by the Ebonyi government to check the spread of bird flu.
Okoroafor said the team would monitor efforts made by the state to stem the spread and stressed the need for collaboration between the federal and state governments.
The Director of Information, Public Enlightenment Department, Mr. Ude Agwu, said the state was an active participant in the fight against bird flu.
He noted that all the necessary committees had been constituted to fight the flu and that UNICEF had been of assistance to the committee.
