Cholera outbreak claims 39 lives in Nigeria
News - Africa news
Lagos, Nigeria - An outbreak of cholera in Nigeria's northern Adamawa state has claimed the lives of 39 people, including a family of three, the local press reported Tuesday.
A 52-year-old man, his wife and son are among the victims of the cholera outbreak in the Maiha council area of the state, which has been blamed on lack of potable water and poor personal hygiene by the residents of the area.
According to the deputy chairman of the council, Yahya Hamman-Julde, the epidemic could not be adequately tackled because of the ongoing strike by medical and health workers in the state.
He called for assistance from the state and federal governments to contain the spread of the infectious disease, an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium 'Vibrio cholerae'.
