7 persons die as strange disease hits Enugu market

No fewer than seven persons have died early hours of Friday and eight others in critical condition over a yet to be confirmed illness at the New Artisan Market, Enugu.

The Chairman of the Livestocks Market, Alhaji Danladi Abubarkar disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.

Abubarkar said that residents of the market woke up to discover the dead bodies which included four men and three women.

He said that all the affected persons which included tricycle riders, artisans and others from different households were stooling and vomiting.

“The corpses are still in their rooms as we speak. We shall soon proceed to the cemetery to bury the Muslims among them while the Christians will be taken by their relations,” he said.

A correspondent of NAN who visited the market reports that officials of the Enugu State Ministry of Health were already on ground to investigate the course of the deaths...

The Enugu State government has revealed the cause of the strange death that greeted the resident New Artisan Market on Friday morning in which seven persons were reported dead and 19 sick with the symptoms of loose stool and vomiting.

In a statement by the ministry of health, the government revealed the cause of the unfortunate death to be as a result of Cholera outbreak.

Confirming the Cholera outbreak in the market, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi, disclosed that the Ministry’s rapid response team, upon receiving reports of the incident carried out an immediate investigation and “it was observed that the patients presented with sudden onset of passage of loose stool and vomiting”.

He added that “the ill persons identified within the area were immediately and safely evacuated to the state teaching hospital and are receiving treatment, while health education on safe and hygienic practices were given to the inhabitants of the market”.

According to the Health Commissioner, “further tests carried out by the State Ministry of Health at the Teaching Hospital revealed that all the persons were suffering from Cholera.

“Samples were collected for further confirmatory tests of this finding.

Seven more people have died of cholera in Enugu State, authorities in the state have confirmed exclusively to PREMIUM TIMES.

The director, public health and disease control, ministry of health, Boniface Oko, who confirmed the development to our reporter in Enugu on Monday, said more than 80 people have been infected with the disease since Friday when the outbreak was confirmed in the state.
