Concern Over Yellow Fever Outbreak

In its first epidemiological week report for 2018, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed the death of 9 persons as a result of Yellow Fever infection. The report confirmed the presence of the disease in 12 local government areas spread across 7 States in Nigeria. Since November 2017, a total of 179 suspected cases have been listed out of which 98 persons have had their blood samples subjected to laboratory analyses.

In January 2018 however, 358 suspected cases of yellow fever have been discovered. The NCDC also confirmed that 230 suspected cases of yellow fever have been examined through laboratory analyses. Two yellow fever related deaths were recorded as at November 2017 although the first incident of the disease was recorded in September 2017 following an index case involving a seven year old girl in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State who was said to have had no recent history of travelling out of the community...

Kebbi State has recorded 36 cases of yellow fever outbreak in 8 local government areas of the state. The state commissioner of Health, Alhaji Umar Usman Kambaza, made this known yesterday in Birnin Kebbi while briefing Journalists on the outbreak of the disease and measures put in by government to curb the disease.

According to him, the local government areas affected are Bagudo, Fakai , Koko/Besse,Maiyama, Ngaski, Shanga, Suru and Yauri . He said in order to prevent the disease from spreading or to counter the spread of the disease in these local government areas, a yellow fever reactive vaccination campaign has been scheduled to begin from 10th to 19th March, 2018...

Strange disease kills 2 persons in Edo

Two persons have died of a strange disease at villages in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State.

The affected villages included Igieduma and Ehor.

The Commissioner for Health, David Osifo, yesterday confirmed the outbreak of the yet-to-be-identified disease.

He said a team of experts had been sent to the affected communities.

The commissioner said the experts were suspecting yellow fever.

He allayed the fears that the ailment was either Lassa fever or Ebola...

Palpable anxiety has enveloped several communities in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State over the rising death toll from the outbreak of a yet-to-be identified viral disease.

Also, medical practitioners have raised concern over a possible spread of the disease to Benin City, the state capital.

As of Friday, sources in the affected villages confirmed that several persons had died from complications of the viral disease.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. David Osifo, who confirmed the outbreak of the disease to our correspondent on Thursday, said it was suspected to be Yellow fever.

He however disclosed that a team of disease control experts was already on the ground in the affected area to contain the strange ailment.

?We suspect that it is Yellow fever. Two have been confirmed as Yellow fever and negative for Lassa fever.

?My team of experts is right there now to contain it. There is no reason for the public to panic, please,? Osifo had said.

However, medical practitioners, who spoke about the disease, urged the government to act fast.

One of the doctors, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to comment on it, emphasised the need to carry out enlightenment campaigns in the affected villages.

He also noted that family members of the victims and all those who had contact with them should be identified and quarantined for not less than seven days.

Yellow fever virus hits Edo, Nine cases confirmed

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed an outbreak of the yellow fever virus in Edo state.

In a statement signed by the body?s chief executive officer, Chikwe Ihekweazu, as at November 21, nine cases had been recorded in four different local government areas of the state, with 140 cases confirmed nationwide through laboratory testing.

The disease control body stated also that the centre is collaborating with the Edo state epidemiology team, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to carry out a detailed investigation and response to confirmed cases...

24 November, 2018 | Abuja ? RESPONSE TO YELLOW FEVER CASES IN EDO STATE

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control is aware of a suspected outbreak of yellow fever in Edo State.

Following the report of an outbreak of fever of unknown origin in four Local Government Areas in Edo state, the state public health team commenced investigation. On the 21st of November 2018, nine cases tested positive for yellow fever. We await confirmatory results from the WHO Regional Reference Laboratory.

The Edo State Epidemiology Team is working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and World Health Organisation (WHO) to carry out a detailed investigation and response to the already confirmed cases.

The NCDC has deployed a rapid response team to support the State with active case search, risk communications and management of cases. There are ongoing plans to begin a reactive vaccination campaign in the affected Local Government area in response to the cluster of cases.

Yellow fever virus is spread through bites by an infected mosquito. It is a completely vaccine preventable disease and a single shot provides immunity for a lifetime. The yellow fever vaccine is freely available to all children under one year as part of the routine immunisation schedule in primary health care centres in Nigeria.

In addition to the vaccine, the public are advised to keep their environments clean and free of stagnant water to discourage the breeding of mosquitoes and use insecticide treated mosquito nets, screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquito bites.

Since September 2017, Nigeria has recorded suspected cases of yellow fever in all states in the country. As at the 11th of November, 140 cases have been laboratory confirmed in Nigeria. A multi-agency yellow fever Emergency Operations Centre has been established at NCDC to coordinate the response.

The symptoms of yellow fever include yellowness of the eyes, sudden fever, headache and body pain. If you have these symptoms or notice someone in your community displaying them, please contact your nearest health centre.

This week, our sister agency NPHCDA flagged off a large yellow fever vaccination campaign, targeting 26 million children and adults (aged 9 months to 44 years) in six states: Niger, Plateau, Borno, Sokoto, Kebbi and the FCT. One dose of the yellow fever vaccine provides for life-long protection against the disease. We urge all Nigerians to get vaccinated and encourage their families, and neighbours to do the same.

The NCDC reassures all Nigerians that we will continue to work with States and partners nationwide to ensure that the outbreak is curtailed.

The Edo state government has confirmed the spread of the Yellow Fever epidemic to 10 Local Government Areas in the state.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. David Osifo on Wednesday, December 5, 2018.

According to Punch, Osifo also revealed that nine people have died as a result of the Yellow Fever outbreak.
