Niger: an epidemic of “appolo” conjunctivitis rages in Niamey

Wednesday, September 20, 2023 5:50 p.m.

An epidemic of conjunctivitis called "appolo" has been raging for more than a month in the city of Niamey, according to health specialists. Many cases have been recorded in recent weeks. Among those affected, several are under treatment, while others are recovered thanks to the care prescribed by treating doctors. Pathology which manifests itself in particular by the redness of the eyes "appolo" is very contagious, especially and spreads with physical contact with infected subjects.

According to Doctor Ibrahim Mamane Lawali, ophthalmologist at the Niamey Reference Hospital, the disease is transmitted "rapidly from one person to another, from tick to tat, because people do not take preventive measures" and minimize its dangerousness.

“I contracted this disease from my friend who was a carrier. Subsequently, I infected the rest of my family in a few days,” informs Nana Aïchatou Abba, victim of this disease.

Doctor Ibrahim defines viral conjunctivitis as “inflammation of the eyes, covering the front of the eye and the inside of the eyelids, due to a virus”.

He adds that “it is a minor infection but which can have serious repercussions, especially since it is hemorrhagic”.

This hemorrhagic conjunctivitis manifests itself by significant pain which, in reality, are the warning signs, in addition to a feeling of grain of sand in the eyes, continues the specialist.

At this stage, he explains, the eyes become very red because of the bleeding in the eyes.

According to him, there are other forms of conjunctivitis which are characterized by moderate redness of the eyes, unlike "appolo", where the hemorrhage is relatively significant.

Once contracted, ''appolo'' can last up to 15 to 20 days, informs the health professional.

According to Halima Seyni, a young student in Niamey who has just recovered from this disease, her treatment was certainly effective but it did not eradicate the disease in a period of time, as was hoped.

“I only took antivirals in drops, on my doctor's orders, but with all that it took me weeks before my eyes returned to normal,” she testifies.

Dr. Ibrahim, the ophthalmologist notes that in this season, the epidemic is “aggressive” because every day they receive many patients.

Having noticed that the risk of contamination is too high during this period, this specialist advises the population to take preventive measures, in particular to maintain "good hand hygiene, the use of barrier gestures, the use of hydroalcoholic gels , or refrain from greeting each other too much with the hands.”
