CANYON COUNTY ? A second Canyon County resident has died of swine flu, Southwest District Health officials confirmed today. The resident was a woman in her 50s who had underlying medical conditions and infections as well as the H1N1 virus.
About 1/3 of the people who have died from H1N1 in the last four months across the country have had infections that have complicated the swine flu, SWDH spokeswoman Laurie Boston said.
The second Canyon County death comes on the heels of news of the deaths of a woman, also in her 50s, from Latah County and a Bannock County teenager.

BY DOUG NADVORNICK
Coeur d'Alene, ID October 16, 2009 9:44 a.m.
Health officials in eastern Washington and northern Idaho announced Thursday that five people who had or likely had the flu have died. Doug Nadvornick reports.
Spokane Regional Health officer Dr. Joel McCullough reports four people with the flu died in Spokane County in the last week.
Dr. Joel McCullough: ?We know that they tested positive for influenza A. In terms of whether the influenza contributed to their death, that's not known at this point.?
McCullough says that means eight people with the flu have died in the last month in Spokane County. Five of those lived in the county.
Across the border, health officials say a Post Falls, Idaho man who had flu symptoms also died this week.
Panhandle Health District spokeswoman Cynthia Taggart says toxicology tests will determine if he had H1N1. If confirmed, he would be the fifth Idaho swine flu victim.

Since Sept. 1, there have been 812 laboratory-confirmed cases of the swine flu and 381 influenza-related hospitalizations in Idaho, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare says. Most of those hospitalized have been children under age 10.
More vaccines are arriving in the state. Now anyone from 6 months old to 64 years old can get vaccinated free at local health departments, or for an administrative charge by some private providers. State and local health officials are still urging people to get vaccinated even though reports of the flu are slowing in Idaho and nationwide.
Most available vaccine is in the shot form, with limited supplies of nasal spray vaccine. Check with your local public health district for information about upcoming clinics. The Central District Health Department serves Ada, Boise, Elmore and Valley counties. Southwest District Health serves Canyon, Adams, Gem, Owyhee, Payette and Washington counties.
