Influenza Weekly Report

Summary

Seventy-nine laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza have been reported in NL to the end of week one, January 4, 2014.

Across Canada, influenza A remains the predominant strain (>90%) with the majority of subtyped (approximately 90%) being A(H1N1)pdm09.

Promote vaccination and preventative actions especially the 3 ?Cs?: Clean your hands, Cover your cough, and Contain your illness.

Laboratory-Confirmed Cases

There were 30 new laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza in week one, December 29, 2013 to January 4, 2014. In comparison, last year there were 110 new lab-confirmed cases in week one.

Summary

Influenza activity increased during the past week in NL. As of January 11, 2014, 133 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported; 28 hospitalizations; 10 ICU cases and one death. There are two-lab-confirmed outbreaks.

In NL, children under 5 years of age are experiencing the highest incidence of laboratory-confirmed influenza.

The predominant strain is influenza A; 70.7% A, 29.3% B. All subtyped influenza A cases are H1N1.

Across Canada, laboratory-confirmed influenza cases and influenza-like illness continue to increase.

Nationally and provincially, influenza indicators continue to be lower than experienced in 2012-2013.
