Still current at: 01 February 2011
There is extreme risk to your security in Egypt due to violent demonstrations and we advise against all travel. Since 25 January 2011 protests have occurred in a number of locations across Egypt. Violent protests intensified on 29 January and curfews have been imposed by the Egyptian authorities. There are widespread reports of arson and looting.

The situation remains unpredictable and may change quickly.

Demonstrations could occur in any part of Egypt.

New Zealanders in Egypt should avoid all areas where protests may occur, exercise caution in public places, and maintain a high level of personal security awareness. You should monitor developments, ensure that you adhere to all instructions from local authorities and respect curfew provisions. If you are concerned about the security situation you should leave if it is safe to do so.

International airports in Egypt remain open, although there is some disruption to flight schedules. There are disruptions to communications networks, particularly mobile phones and the internet.

Egypt: Demonstrations and Departure
Posted: 1 February 2011, 13:25 NZDT

Mass demonstrations are expected throughout Egypt on Tuesday 1 February. All New Zealanders currently in Egypt are advised to stay indoors throughout the day and night unless they have confirmed departure arrangements in place and it is safe for them to travel to the airport. Curfews should be observed and you will need to check in for flights five hours before departure.

New Zealanders wanting to depart should register with the New Zealand Embassy in Cairo so consular staff based at the airport can facilitate departure if required.

New Zealand Embassy: +20 101 061 163

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade: 04 439 8000 (if phoning from within New Zealand) or +64 4 439 8000 (if phoning form overseas)

New Zealanders who have not already registered their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade need to do so as a matter of priority. We continue to advise against all travel to Egypt.
