"While we're at a period where actually we might still have some international travellers coming in, [it's important] that they know exactly what the expectations are of them and what our powers are if they do not follow them," Ardern told The AM Show on Monday.
"We have the ability to quarantine them - put them in a facility, quarantine them, have a police officer stand outside the door and make sure they don't leave. But I've also asked the question whether I have the power to deport as well," she said.

Travellers who can't convince border officialsthey have adequate arrangements for self-isolation could be sent home, Ministry of Health Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield says.
Arrivals at the airport were being questioned before they reached the immigration desk, Bloomfield said, to make sure they have arrangements for self-isolation.
"They are currently being quarantined. If they fail to depart after quarantine, they will be arrested and detained under the Immigration Act."
Officers arrived at the Rucksacker backpacker hostel in Christchurch about 11.30am on Tuesday. A witness reported seeing a police prisoner van transport a woman wearing a mask, and several police officers were seen speaking to other backpackers.
"Cabinet has approved for temporary visa holders to be liable for detention and deportation if they do not comply with instructions," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told the media on Monday.
Ardern says anyone who is deported from New Zealand will face "serious and on-going consequences".
"[There is] a high likelihood of being turned down for future visa applications here and in many other countries."
