Batavia, N.Y. --- The New York State Department of Health now confirms it is investigating an ?outbreak? of potentially deadly bacteria that has or is infecting patients and United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. UMMC confirms that as many as six patients at one point were being treated for the infection and as of Tuesday night three confirmed cases in patients exist and six additional patients are in the process of being screened.

"Oh we're monitoring them throughout the day," UMMC President and C.E.O. Mark Schoell said of the screening process and current cases. Schoell also tells 13WHAM News that the death of a ?potential? C diff patient in the hospital?s care last month is still under investigation and the exact cause of death is currently unknown...

UMMC is making progress in dealing with a recent outbreak of Clostridium difficile, according to spokeswoman Colleen Flynn.

The number of patients being screened for potentially having C. diff has dropped from six last weekend to three.

And staff, using a sterilization machine designed to clean potentially contaminated surfaces, has learned how to use the equipment to exceed the manufacturer's standards for cleaning surfaces.

"We would really like the current cases to be the last cases," Flynn said. "We don't want any more hospital-acquired cases. We want to eradicate it all together..."

BATAVIA, NY (WKBW) - State health officials are investigating cases of C. difficile infection at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

18 patients have been identified at the Genesee County hospital. 11 of them contracted the bacteria while hospitalized at UMMC. The remaining seven were infected before they were admitted, said Jeffrey Hammond, spokesperson for the New York State Department of Health...

UMMC spokeswoman Colleen Flynn said, "This is something that's in every hospital. Every hospital has to address it."

Flynn says C-Diff is a sort of battle between good and bad bacteria that is already in the body.

"Sometimes people who are prescribed antibiotics or who change the flora in their GI tract, it gives an opportunity for the C-Diff bacteria to flourish and then it releases toxins and that can lead to symptoms such as bloating, discomfort, and diarrhea," said Flynn....

Batavia, N.Y. --- An outbreak of C difficile infections at United Memorial Medical Center is being linked to the death of three patients. The New York State Department of Health also confirms a total of 19 C diff cases since February 28th are part of an ongoing investigation.

The family of Margaret Wagner, 86, confirms Wagner is one of those three deaths after passing away Monday afternoon...

State ends investigation of C. diff outbreak at Batavia hospital

New cleaning procedures have gone into effect at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia as a result of an outbreak of Clostridium difficile that started in late winter.

All patient areas, not just rooms occupied by people with the bacterium, are scrubbed with a solution that contains bleach, said Lorri Goergen, infection prevention manager of the hospital. The importance of using friction in all cleaning has been communicated to staff...
