New mom with swine flu dies in Montreal

A 23-year-old Montreal woman who contracted swine flu in June, and had to have her baby by caesarean section, died Thursday night without ever seeing her new son.

Fatiha Idrissi went to the emergency ward at Montreal's Sainte-Justine Hospital with a high fever when she was 38 weeks pregnant, according to her husband, Mohamed Idrissi.

She was admitted to the hospital and two days later developed pneumonia, he said, whereupon doctors decided to transfer her to Sacr?-Coeur Hospital.

He said it was then they were told Fatiha was infected with the H1N1 virus and would have to have an emergency C-section.

The baby was immediately transferred to the Montreal Children's Hospital because doctors were worried he also had swine flu, Idrissi said.

He said he never got to speak to his wife again after the C-section because she was kept heavily sedated.

Idrissi said his son, Yassine, did not have swine flu and is now home and healthy.

MONTREAL — A Montreal woman who died Friday after contracting the H1N1 virus awoke only once from a medically induced coma after the birth of her son in June, asking weakly for “my baby,” a friend of hers said.

Fatiha Idrissi Kaitouni, 23, died Friday at Sacre-Coeur Hospital in Montreal, more than two months after being hospitalized for a high fever while in the final months of her pregnancy.

Days later, after suffering severe respiratory problems, she was given a C-section and her son was born.

Her baby Yassine was reportedly healthy after some initial breathing problems.

Hajar Rougui, a good friend of Kaitouni, told reporters the woman was put into an artificial coma following the C-section and she hemorrhaged badly.

Kaitouni never really regained consciousness, Rougui said, and woke just once to say, “My baby, my baby.”

Hospital officials were not available Saturday to comment on the exact cause of Kaitouni’s death.

Marie-Eve Bedard, a spokeswoman for Quebec Health Minister Yves Bolduc, said that people can only die from complications from H1N1, not the virus itself.

She was not sure exactly how the woman died.

Kaitouni reportedly came to Canada from Morocco to join her husband a year ago.

Described by a friend as “a ball of joy” who was always smiling, Kaitouni had hoped to have four or five kids and live in a big house.

She was not sure exactly how the woman died.

If they want other moms to not suffer this fate, why don't they want to clarify that the virus is the root problem?
