New Jersey to receive first batch of swine flu vaccine next week

New Jersey is in line to receive its first shipment of swine flu vaccine next week, Health Commissioner Heather Howard announced today.

The first batch will be the nasal mist, which is only recommended for healthy people between the ages of 2 and 49 who are not pregnant. Injectable vaccines will follow, according to a report in The Star-Ledger.

Howard said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has told her there will be enough of the vaccine for anyone who wants it. Seventeen people across the state have died from the H1N1 virus.

Most major health insurers have said they will cover the swine flu vaccine, and the state government has promised uninsured residents will get the vaccine for free. The federal government has given about $40 million to New Jersey to help fight influenza, and much of the money will go toward purchasing the vaccine.
