OTTAWA (AFP) ? A new case of mad cow disease has been detected in the western Canadian province of Alberta, the government's Food Inspection Agency announced Friday.

The degenerative ailment known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was discovered in a six-year-old slaughtered cow, but authorities offered assurances that no part of the animal has entered the food chain.

It was the 14th case of mad cow disease discovered in Canada since 2003.

BSE is the suspected cause of a similar brain-destroying illness in humans called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD).

OTTAWA - The latest case of mad cow disease has been confirmed in a dairy cow from British Columbia, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Monday.

Mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, was recently found in a seven-year-old dairy cow.

No part of the cow entered the human food or animal feed systems, CFIA said in a statement.

The agency has identified which B.C. farm the cow is from but was not releasing that information.

"The CFIA is tracing the animal's herd . . . at the time of birth and examining possible sources of infection. The age and location of the infected animal are consistent with previous cases detected in Canada," the statement said.

This the 15th case of mad cow disease discovered in Canada and was discovered by the federal BSE detection program.
