Dutch to Suriname for research into zika virus
jan 22, 2016
Dutch and Surinamese researchers will investigate the consequences of zika virus infections. The virus is highly likely dangerous for unborn children, but can also possibly lead to meningitis and Guillain-Barr? syndrome.
Erasmus MC in Rotterdam will carry out the research. According to head of virology Marion Koopmans, setting up such a large study, is a lot of work, but the permission for the research is in now.
A group of researchers from Erasmus MC will soon leave for Suriname to conduct research with partners there, including the characteristics of the virus and the effects of zika on the nervous system. "We will investigate whether and what the link is between a zika infection on one hand and meningitis, and Guillain-Barr? on the other hand," says Koopmans.
