Netherlands - LP H7N9 Avian Flu in Friesland province

Gert van der Hoek

In Memoriam - Editor, Senior Moderator
[h=1]A mild form of bird flu had been detected in a poultry farm with 48,000 chickens in the Frisian Hiaure. It probably is the H7 variant.

The mild H7 strain of bird flu could mutate to a highly contagious and deadly variant for chickens. The birds in the farm are culled.

In an area of one kilometer around the holding in the municipality Dongeradeel a transportation ban for poultry, poultry manure, eggs, used litter has been installed. There are no other chicken farms in the area.

Avian Flu Virus Influenza A virus subtype H7N9 Hiaure not related to Chinese virus

Published on June 13, 2016

The Influenza A virus subtype H7N9 virus found in the Netherlands found is not related to the Influenza A virus subtype H7N9 LPAI virus circulating in China that can cause illness and death in humans. This is evident from the first examination of CVI into the origin of the virus confirmed in Hiaure .

On Thursday, June 9th bird flu (avian influenza, AI) was confirmed by CVI on a farm with free-range chickens in Hiaure (Friesland). The genetic material of one H7 virus was confirmed with the aid of PCR-test. It is a low pathogenic (LPAI) variant of the bird flu virus, which corresponds to the mild clinical symptoms. Then, through research (sequencing) the N-subtype was detected, and it became clear that it is an Influenza A virus subtype H7N9 virus.

Further analysis of the sequence of a portion of the H- and N-segment shows a relationship with variations of avian influenza viruses that circulate in Europe in wild birds. In the Netherlands found Influenza A virus subtype H7N9 virus is not related to zoonotic virus that may cause morbidity and mortality in people in China circulating LPAI Influenza A virus subtype H7N9. At this time, CVI carries out further research to determine the sequence of the entire genome of the virus. This may provide more insight into the origin and introduction route of the Influenza A virus subtype H7N9 bird flu virus in Friesland.

In the Netherlands, there are 30 to 50 introductions of mild forms of avian influenza annually. In case of infections with low pathogenic variants of the H5 or H7-type (about three - six per year) additional measures are taken. These viruses can mutate into the highly pathogenic dangerous (highly contagious and deadly for chickens) .
