KATHMANDU: The District Public Health Office Kathmandu is all set to search for leprosy patients at slums in Kathmandu with a view to providing them treatment. As part of its door-to-door initiative, the health office will press 50 Female Community Health Volunteers into service at the slums in Shankamul, the Balaju bypass, in and around the VS Niketan in New Baneshwor and Tilganga on Sunday and Monday. Mahindra Prasad Shrestha, DPHO director, expressed belief that the pilot project will help assess the status of leprosy patients at the slums and formulate urban-based leprosy policies...
...Although the government formally declared the eradication of leprosy in January 2010, cases are surfacing in slum areas, said Chudamani Bhandari, director of the Leprosy Control Division at the Ministry of Health and Population. The ministry has recorded 0.79 leprosy prevalence rate of leprosy, which is slightly higher than last year's 0.77.
In the fiscal 2011/12, the ministry recorded 1210 new cases in the first quarter and 990 in the second quarter. The under-treatment cases in the first and second quarters stood at 2,408 and 2,286 respectively.
The government has managed to eliminate the disease in 61 districts, but the prevalence rate is still high in 14 Tarai districts. ..
