'No Chance' of Finding 159 Nepal Landslide Victims
World | Associated Press | Updated: August 03, 2014 17:24 IST
Kathmandu, Nepal, Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014.

Kathmandu: There is no chance of finding any of the more than 150 people who are believed to have been buried by a massive landslide in northern Nepal, an official said on Sunday, as rescuers struggled to dig through piles of rock, mud and trees.

Rescuers have so far recovered only eight bodies since the landslide early Saturday blocked a mountain river, causing the water to form a lake that was threatening to burst and sweep several villages. Fresh rainfall on Sunday hampered search attempts.

"We have no chance of finding any of the missing people alive under this pile of debris," said Yadav Prasad Koirala, who heads the government's Department of Natural Disaster Management. "We have names of 159 people who are believed to be missing and buried, but there could be even more people."

Bihar evacuates thousands after deadly Nepal landslide
BY GOPAL SHARMA
PATNA/KATHMANDU Sat Aug 2, 2014 11:32pm IST

(Reuters) - Authorities in eastern India began evacuating thousands of villagers on Saturday after efforts to clear a deadly landslide in neighbouring Nepal sparked fears of flash floods downstream, government officials said.

The landslide, triggered by heavy rains in Nepal's Sindhupalchowk district, killed at least nine people and buried dozens of homes. More than 100 people are believed missing.

The slide has also created a mud dam blocking the Sunkoshi river, which runs into India's Bihar state as the Kosi river.

The Kosi river remains a key concern for both India and Nepal after it broke its banks in 2008 and changed its course, submerging swathes of land and affecting more than two million people in Bihar. More than 500 people died.

Bihar on alert as landslide in Nepal threatens Kosi deluge, massive evacuation on
Faizan Ahmad & Bhuvaneshwar Prasad,TNN | Aug 3, 2014, 01.39 AM IST

PATNA/PURNIA: Flood warnings were sounded in Bihar's Saharsa and Purnia divisions on Saturday, with people alerted between the east and west embankments of Kosi which caused great sorrow in the state in 2008, to move to safer places. This was after Saharsa divisional commissioner Ramrup Singh and district magistrate Shashi Bhushan Kumar made on-spot assessment of the danger to Kosi's embankments after heavy flow of water into the river from Nepal side.

A massive landslide took place around 2am on Saturday following heavy rain in a place called Jure in Sindhupalchok district in Nepal. According to a Kosi chief engineer Rajesh Kumar, the landslide is blocking the water flow into the Kosi in Nepal, and the authorities there, to prevent flooding, were planning to detonate the blockade. Should this happen, a sudden gush of water is inevitable which would flow down into an already swelling river on the Indian side.
