Health fears as chickens dumped carelessly

KATHMANDU, JUL 29 -

Local residents in Bhaktapur are on tenterhooks about a possible health hazard after poultry farmers haphazardly dumped chickens suspected to have been infected with bird flu .

On Sunday, locals hit the streets after foul smell started emanating from Nangkhel-2 where fowls were dumped. An excavator was pressed into service to bury the chickens.

Jay Benju, a native of the area, said three truckloads of dead chickens were dumped at the site on Friday night. ?We are having a hard time dealing with the stench,? Benju said.

Chickens were also disposed carelessly in areas between Bhotedhikur and Nalinchowk, near the Arniko Highway. District Veterinary Chief of Bhaktapur Khagendra Bhatta said four sacks of dead chickens were recovered from the site. ?This is extreme negligence, which could affect people?s health,? Bhatta said. The District Veterinary Office later dumped the chickens safely in a nearby area...

Bird flu confirmed in two more poultry farms

BHAKTAPUR, JUL 30 - Animal health authorities have confirmed bird flu in two more poultry farms of Bhaktapur district. Chickens from Bimal Bhimasu's poultry farm in Lakhula and Balram's farm in Nangkhel-2 have been confirmed with the H5N1 virus. The tests were conducted by the Central Veterinary Laboratory at Tripureshwor in Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, preparations have been made to cull some 5000 chicken from Bhimasu's farm and other 8000 chicken from Balram's farm...

Three more poultry farms infected with bird flu in Bhaktapur

BHAKTAPUR, JUL 31 -

Chickens at three more poultry farms in the district have been found to be infected with bird flu (H5N1) virus.

Bird flu was found in the chickens at the GJ Poultry Farm at Nakhel -2, at a poultry farm owned by one Bimal Dhimasu at Lakulachhe in Bhaktapur Municipality and at the poultry farm owned by Krishna Ram Chhushyabaga at Bageshwari VDC in the district, the District Livestock Service Office, Bhaktapur stated.

The birds at these farms have been culled at the instructions of the Chief District Officer Himnath Dawadi after the veterinary laboratory at Tripureshwar confirmed bird flu infection at these three farms on Tuesday evening...

BHAKTAPUR, Aug 2: Stinking ordour from a bird flu infested poultry farm in Jagati of Bhaktapur municipality-2 has taken the locals in the neighbourhood ill while forcing some to migrate due to fear of infection.

A technical team from the District Livestock Service Office had culled 5,220 chickens and 850 kilograms of poultry feed in the farm after the presence of H1N5 virus was confirmed last Tuesday.

BHAKTAPUR, AUG 03 - Already reeling under the recent outbreak of bird flu virus, chicken from six more poultry farms in Bhaktapur district have been confirmed with the deadly virus as of Saturday.

Animal health expert Bijayakanta Jha said that chicken from six more poultry farms in Bhaktapur have been confirmed with the H5N1 virus in the tests performed by the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Thapathali, Kathmandu.

BHAKTAPUR: Poultry farming experts say the government?s inability to check the spread of bird flu in Jhapa, Chitwan and Pokhara was responsible for the outbreak in the Kathmandu Valley. They argue that had the government tightened quarantine check at border points in Kathmandu and other places after Jhapa, Chitwan and Pokhara saw the bird flu spread, the outbreak would not have taken the present proportion in Bhaktapur.

Poultry expert Dr Til Chandra Bhattarai said the bird flu infection had assumed epidemic proportions in the Kathmandu Valley after the government failed to cull the infected fowls within three days of getting infected in a scientific way.

?The government did not apply quarantine check at border points after flu detection in Jhapa, Chitwan and Pokhara,? Bhattarai said. He asked the government to set up laboratory in every district livestock office to test bird flu. He also demanded that the government formulate a regulation to manage poultry farming...

With a series of rise in bird flu cases, chicken from five more poultry farms in Bhaktapur district have been confirmed with the deadly virus as of Monday.

With this, the bird-flu case has risen to 19 in Bhaktapur area.

According to District Veterinary Office, the avian influenza virus was confirmed in the poultry farms of Bir Bahadur Bhusal in Balkot, Kiran Suwal in Jhaukhel, Narayan Hari Khatri in Sallaghari and Ram Lama in Sudal.

Earlier, 15,000 chickens were culled after the H5N1 virus was confirmed in Narayan Hari's poultry farm in Nangkhel.

According to Khagendra Bhatta, Chief of District Veterinary Office, Bhaktapur, there are around 25,000 chickens in Kiran Suwal's farm only.

The authorities are preparing to cull the infected chicken from the farms today itself.

Since the first outbreak in a poultry farm in Matatirtha and Chabahil on July 16, the virus has claimed over 25,000 chicken s in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur districts.

The Capital has witnessed the 15th bird flu outbreak in the last two weeks alone.

Following the conformation of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in many poultry farms in Bhaktapur district, the government has imposed ban on the poultry product s in all the three districts of the Capital from Thursday.

KATHMANDU, Aug 8: A total of eight bird flu outbreaks have been confirmed in Bhaktapur district on Thursday.

According to Narayan Prasad Ghimire, Spokesperson at the Directorate of Animal Health (DoAH), the bird flu outbreak confirmed at four poultry farms at Jhaukhel VDC, two in Chittapol VDC, and one each farms at Tathali and Sipadol VDCs in the district.

With the confirmation of eight new outbreaks, the total number of outbreaks has reached to 32 in last two weeks in the district alone...

According to the Bhaktapur District Livestock Office, bird flu was confirmed at the farms of Yogesh Hada in Jhaukhel-7, Prakash Bastola at Bageshwori-2, Sanukaji Tamang at Sipadol-8, Ranjan Bhainatwa at Sudal and Kanchha Sukubhattu at Nakhel-2 in the district.

Chicken culling in full swing in Bhaktapur

KATHMANDU, Aug 16: On the second day after the announcement of Bhaktapur district as a bird flu emergency zone, the government on Friday continued culling chickens in various parts of the district.

Ten teams mobilized on Friday by the Directorate of Animal Health (DoAH) in the district culled thousands of chickens in poultry farms in the district, according to the DoAH. Each team comprised 10 workers, two technicians and a veterinary doctor. The Ministry of Agricultural Development had decided to execute a blanket culling of chickens in the district on Wednesday.

Narayan Ghimire, spokesperson at the DoAH, informed that thousands of chickens and ducks were culled and chicken feeds were destroyed at poultry farms in Chhaling, Sudal, Bageshwori, Nankhel, Dadhikot, Chitpol, Tathali, Duwakot, Dadhikot, Katunje, Chaukhel and Sipadol, among others...
