Japanese encephalitis claims two lives in Morang

BIRATNAGAR, Aug 13: At least two persons have died of Japanese Encephalitis that has been spreading rapidly in different villages of Morang district.
Japanese Encephalitis (Acute Encephalitic Syndrome) is a disease caused by domestic pigs, wild birds (herons), and mosquitoes as they are vectors for the virus that can get transmitted to humans. This disease is most prevalent in Southeast Asia and East Asia.

The deceased have been identified as Pawal BK of Letang VDC-1 and Dev Kumari Ghimire of Letang VDC-3, according to District Public Health Office (DPHO) of Morang.

Earlier, Hangfara Limbu of Pathari, Morang, had died due to the infection.

Out of nine infected persons from those three VDCs, three have already died, the DPHO Morang confirmed.

Japanese Encephalitis virus toll climbs to six

BIRATNAGAR, AUG 21 - With the death of two more people suffering from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) on Wednesday, the death toll from the disease in the district has climbed to six.

According to the District Public Health Office (DPHO) in Morang, the deceased identified as Dil Man Limbu and Sina Magar breathed their last while undergoing treatment at Nobel Medical College (NMC) in Biratnagar. Over the past week, the mosquito-borne disease had claimed the lives of four people from Letang. The disease that had surfaced about three weeks ago in Letang and Pathari had quickly turned into an epidemic, infecting about 20 people over the period. ?18 people are currently under treatment at our hospital and five of them are in critical condition,? said manager Narayan Prasad Dahal of the NMC.

EDCD alarmed by JE fatalities

KATHMANDU, Sept 1 : Health officials at the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) of the Department of Health Services (DoHS) said that they are alarmed by the spread of the Japanese Encephalitis in some VDCs of Morang and Rajbiraj districts, as nine out of 10 infected with the virus have already died, officials said.

"The situation is too serious as the virus seems to be deadly," Dr Baburam Marasaini, director at the EDCD, said adding that the virus, which has been rapidly spreading in the Tarai regions, seems to be even more dangerous than Ebola virus. He informed that the infection was high among children.

Among the nine deceased, five were under the age of 15. The other fatalities comprised of one senior citizen and three adults.
