COLUMBUS – A nearly two-week quarantine at a Columbus nursing home for an upper respiratory illness that has contributed to five deaths and sickened dozens of residents and staff members has been lifted.

Health officials said three of the patients sickened by the respiratory disease have tested positive for mycoplasma pneumonia, commonly known as “walking pneumonia.” The disease is transmitted by respiratory droplets released when coughing or through close contact with an infected person.

Rayman said as of Wednesday there were 59 cases of the respiratory illness, including 15 hospitalizations and five deaths. The total includes 34 nursing home patients and 15 staff members.
