The Buncombe County child died in early June, and officials from the state Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday it was due to the disease.
The last spotted fever-related death in North Carolina was in 2009. There were nearly 600 probable or laboratory-confirmed spotted fever cases in the state in 2012, and cases were reported in 78 counties.
