HA NOI ? Six Asian nations yesterday committed to revamping the way they compile health care information using a programme that falls under the auspices of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Viet Nam, China, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines and Mongolia concluded a four-day workshop in Ha Noi yesterday that saw them discuss obstacles to obtaining and using health care data. The conference, organised by the Health Metrics Network (HMN), a WTO-aligned group, also focused on how the countries could better serve their citizens.
"Viet Nam and other countries in the region are suffering from fragmentation of health information and under-use of information in decision making," said HMN executive secretary Sally Stansfield.
Stansfield said the barriers were common in most developing countries, especially those reliant on support from international donors.
The health metric network is designed to help governments manage health information using an integrated system that links donors and health officials.
WHO Representative in Viet Nam Hans Troedsson said Viet Nam and other countries in the region have made standardising their healthcare systems a priority. That includes building databases of medical information and training workers to run the systems.
Without adequate information systems to manage health data, developing countries face grave risks as their governments are not able to fully gauge priorities and delegate services, the HMN said in a news release.
According to Stansfield, this in turn can cause a wide array of problems, including increases in preventable diseases.
Viet Nam would try its best to improve healthcare statistics, systematise information collection in both the State-owned and private sectors and computerise the healthcare network, said the director of the Health Ministry?s Planning Department, Duong Huy Lieu. ? VNS
