Foot-and-mouth hits Caprivi

KATIMA MULILO - The movement of cattle, milk and produce such as grass in and outside Caprivi Region has been suspended following the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) at Masikili, some 75 kilometres east of Katima Mulilo in Kabbe constituency.
According to regional state veterinarian Dr Frank Chitate, about 37 cattle out of 67 tested were found infected with the highly contagious disease that affects mainly cloven-hoofed animals.
?I can confirm to you that we have detected the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease at Masikili and we are still trying to establish the extent of the outbreak,? admitted Chitate.
During the suspension, the movement of cloven- hoofed animals and its products is not allowed and measures such as the suspension of permits and roadblocks have been enforced to try to contain the disease in the shortest possible time.
?We are not allowing any movement of cloven- hoofed animals and their products. We have put a stop to issuing permits to farmers and have erected roadblocks at Ngoma, Ngwansu, Bukalo, Wenela, Izimwe, Kongola and Kalimbeza as part of efforts to contain the disease,? said Chitate.
